We will be working closely with community leaders and advocates to move the needle on childhood obesity in Halifax County.” Healthy Places NC is a new place-based initiative of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, aimed at improving the health and overall quality of life for people in rural areas of North Carolina. The goal of the initiative is to have a real impact on major health challenges for the long term. The Trust plans to invest $100 million in 10 to 15 financially disadvantaged, rural North Carolina counties over the next 10 years. Halifax, Beaufort and McDowell counties are the first three counties to be invited to participate. Halifax County is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, eight miles from the Virginia border. Located in the Roanoke River and Tar-Pamlico River basins, the county encompasses 722 square miles with a population of just over 57,000 people.
