What Matters to Kids

We’re working to build a stronger North Carolina by focusing on these key opportunities for children and their families.

This is what’s possible for all children:

High Quality Early Childhood Education

The first 2,000 days of a child’s life are critical to all later learning, health, and economic success. Brains are built, not born. Parents and caregivers need strong support to lay the groundwork for a lifetime.

Healthy Children

Healthy children perform better in school and in life. Kids need to have reliable health coverage, regular preventive health care, a medical home, and specialized services when necessary. These low-cost investments in childhood set kids up for a lifetime of good health.

Nurturing Homes and Communities

Children thrive when they grow up in safe, stable, and nurturing environments. We focus first on policies and programs that strengthen families, prevent abuse and neglect, and help families stay together. We also advocate for effective treatment for victims of abuse and neglect to help kids stay resilient and overcome trauma.

Family Economic Security

Children living in financially secure families are more likely to succeed in school, stay healthy, and become self-sufficient as adults. Nearly half of NC children live in households that are struggling to make ends meet. We can ensure every child gets a fair shot with good schools, safe neighborhoods, good nutrition, and a strong health care system in place.
