Job Opening: Policy Intern

Position Description

NC Child is seeking a graduate student to work as a policy generalist intern directly with NC Child’s Policy Team. The portfolio of this work will be concentrated on legislative and administrative affairs for Early Childhood Education and Child Health & Wellbeing for all NC children. The Policy Intern will analyze and create legislative power maps and support specific policy analysis on NC Child’s priorities and other policy content areas as needed.   

The graduate student will have an opportunity to build and strengthen professional skills in writing, research, analysis, organization, and interpersonal communications. The student will conduct research and analysis to develop power maps, fact sheets, issue briefs, campaign materials, and other educational resources specific to policy. 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct secondary research on legislators and legislative districts and develop power maps. 
  • Assist in qualitative and quantitative analysis, data collection and management. 
  • Support policy brief and fact sheet development as needed. 
  • Support policy strategy research. 
  • Produce written analyses of reviews and data trends. 
  • Evaluate and synthesize administrative policies and legislative proposals that affect families and federal and state budgets. 
  • Other necessary project-specific tasks as they arise.  

Qualifications and Skills:

Candidates should demonstrate the following required skills and /or traits:

  • Currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health, Public Policy, Political Science, Social Work, or a related field.   
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative and quantitative data analysis and research.  
  • Ability to present complex ideas clearly and simply to a wide range of audiences. 
  • Demonstrated attention to detail. 
  • Demonstrated time management and project management skills.   
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and other Office Suite Products.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Position Requirements

The Policy Intern is envisioned as a hybrid position. While this position is open to being fully remote, the ideal candidate would be able to come into the office in Raleigh a few hours per week or as needed.

Position Type: Internship, Fall Semester (September-December, approx. 166 hours)
Compensation: The stipend for this position is $15.00 per hour.
Reports to: Policy Analyst, Cassandra Rycek
