Take a closer look at child hunger in WNC, The Asheville Citizen-Times (10.04.2011)
Many of us were shocked recently to learn that 29 percent of WNC’s children live in hunger. More families in our region now live in poverty than at any time since the Great Depression. Child abuse is on the rise. All these things are happening just a few miles, or a few blocks, from where you and I live.
Nelson Mandela once said, “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”
On Oct. 10, Elders United for a Just Society will sponsor a symposium, “The State of the Child in WNC, Children in Crisis.’’ Dr. Olson Huff, Asheville pediatrician, founding medical director of Mission Children’s Hospital and a longtime advocate for children, and Marylyn Huff, educator, church leader and owner of Huff Associates, will lead the symposium. The event will be held at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 3070 Sweeten Creek Road, from 10-11:45 a.m. The public is invited. Direct inquiries to jamesochatham@gmail.com.
