The number of uninsured children has fallen to historic lows in North Carolina, according to a report issued by the N.C. Institute of Medicine and Action for Children North Carolina.
The organizations credit public policy and government insurance programs for the reduction in the number of children lacking health insurance. They predict further drops as families enroll in subsidized coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
The most recent level of uninsured children is 8.4 percent statewide, the report said, down 30 percent over the past five years. Those drops have taken place at a time that poverty has spread to 1 in 4 children in the state, a 33 percent increase since 2007.
The organizations said in their report, “2013 North Carolina Child Health Report Card,” that the majority of uninsured children in the state are eligible for Medicaid and CHIP, Children’s Health Insurance Programs, but are not enrolled.
