The early years of a child’s life are full of growth as they race towards reaching critical developmental milestones. They say their first words, take their first steps, and they sprout—and even lose—their baby teeth.
The Center of Excellence, now based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, has served more than 300 children and families, and provides a robust curriculum that covers foreign languages, music, and science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) courses.
If we don’t commit to ensuring child care providers and systems are supported, we could see providers across the state close their doors which would threaten child care services for thousands of families.
For parents and caregivers, the cost of medical care oftentimes forces them to make impossible choices. For me, I had to choose between my medical situation and my child’s treatment.
This journey began for us when my son was 18 months old at an appointment with his pediatrician because I started noticing that he was losing words quickly. I was sitting in the pediatrician’s office and heard these words: “It has been determined that your child has been diagnosed with autism.”
Though M’s experience of finding resources started off isolated, she soon learned that other families like hers were going through the same thing. This realization prompted M to start a support group for other Latino families in Cabarrus County.
